INT. KITCHEN

CHARACTERS:

JOHN - A middle-aged man with messy hair and a coffee mug in his hand.

KAREN - John's wife, a woman in her mid-thirties wearing an apron.

SCENE:

John is sitting at the kitchen table, scrolling through his phone. Karen is cooking breakfast.

JOHN: (without looking up from his phone) What are you making?

KAREN: Pancakes, if you would look up from your phone for one second.

JOHN: (finally looks up) Pancakes? That sounds amazing. Can I help?

KAREN: (smiling) Sure, grab the flour from the pantry.

John gets up and walks to the pantry. As he grabs the flour, he notices a strange noise coming from the basement.

JOHN: Karen, do you hear that?

KAREN: (focused on cooking) Hear what?

JOHN: That noise coming from the basement. It sounds like something's down there.

KAREN: (rolls her eyes) Oh, John. It's probably just the washing machine. You know it makes weird noises sometimes.

JOHN: (hesitant) I don't know...it sounds like someone's down there.

KAREN: (sighs) Fine, go check it out if it'll make you feel better.

SCENE:

John slowly walks down the stairs to the basement. The noise is getting louder. As he reaches the bottom, he sees a figure standing in the corner.

JOHN: Hello? Who's there?

The figure turns around and it's revealed to be a masked man holding a knife.

MASKED MAN: (menacingly) Well, well, well. Look who decided to join me for breakfast.

JOHN: (shocked) What do you want? Money? We don't have much, but you can take it all. Just please don't hurt us.

MASKED MAN: (laughs) Oh, I don't want your money, John. I want something much more valuable.

SCENE:

Karen hears a struggle coming from the basement. She runs down the stairs to see John and the masked man fighting. In a frantic attempt to help, she grabs a frying pan and hits the masked man over the head.

KAREN: (breathless) John, are you okay?

JOHN: (nodding) Yeah, I think so. Thank you, Karen. You saved my life.

KAREN: (smiling weakly) No need to thank me. That's what wives are for.

SCENE:

Police are investigating the break-in. The masked man is handcuffed and being led to the squad car.

POLICE OFFICER: (to John and Karen) You two are lucky to be alive. You owe your wife a debt of gratitude, sir.

JOHN: (nodding) Yes, I do. And I plan on spending the rest of my life repaying her for it.

KAREN: (leaning into John) You don't have to repay me for anything, John. Just promise me you'll never take another moment for granted.

JOHN: (smiling) I promise.
